QUICKSTEP EVENTS

AT THE BAND CONTEST

BIG CROWD AT DUNEDIN

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 25. The "A" and "B" grade quicksteps and military displays were judged at Carisbrook. this afternoon before a crowd of nearly 20,000 people. Thirteen bands competed in the "B" grade and seven in the "A" grade. The former was won by Napier and the latter by Invercargill. Results, are as follows:—

The judge said that the section had been a very interesting one. He was not a great believer ■in 7'own choice" selections for contests, though there was a lot to be said for them from the point of view of the public. The work he had heard had been o£ a fairly high standard. Some bands had undertaken . selections which were beyond their- abilities, and one had chosen a task that was far too easy/ The following are the "A" grade aggregates for the first and second tests, and music m the quickstep:—Woolston 362, Municipal 341, Oamaru Municipal' 337% . New Zealand bands was: untunefulness, and he suggested that conductors, could remedy this, defect by assiduous practice of hymn tunes. Another point was that all bands were too' loud; There was a great difference between a full tone and mere noise. New Zealand ■ bands would be improved- greatly if conductors, insisted on softer playing. . . .. ■ •
