ATHLETIC TITLES

PROVINCIAL MEETING

M CVILLY SHIELD POINTS

SATURDAY'S EESULTS

Form worked out very much along the lines anticipated at the Wellington provincial amateur athletic and grass-cycling championship meeting at the Basin Kescrve on Saturday. There were few surprises in the long series of events, which made itp the varied and attractive programme. Unfortunately, the weather conditions were rather out of tune. Except for the one shower in the morning, rain held off, but a northerly wind, much stronger in the morning than in the afternoon, was troublesome to competitors. . Conditions were not conductive to record-breaking performances, but, nevertheless, during the day there were some fine achievements. A fair attendance watched proceedings in the morning, when mainly heats were decided, and in the afternoon there was an attendance of about 1200 to 1500. In the late afternoon tha sun struggled through the clouds, and conditions were pleasanter. Not for some years ' probably" was the competition for honours more evenly balanced. It was keen all day, both for the individual titles and the teams' trophy, the McVilly- Challenge Shield. As in 1932, the representatives of the Hawke'B Bay Poverty Bay sub-centre made a. strong bid to wrest the shield from the Wellington Club. Towards the end of the programme the Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay team were leading by two points. They failed to score, however, in the javelin and long jump championships. The Wellington Club collected thirteen points in these two events, which put the team ten points ahead. The points gained in this competition were" as follows:— Wellington 67 ' Hawkers Bay-Poverty Bay .... 57 Combined Old Boys 25 16 Athletic .. i 10 University 10 Lower Hust, ............^. ; 9 ...Kiwi.. 7 Miramar ........•.-.>;..»>..;.»> 6 Marlborough, „..»«•>: ..; 3 Motueka. 1 Petone 1 The Wairarapa and Scottish Harriers' representatives failed to score. A feature of the competition was the success of the representatives of the Combined. College Old Boys'' Club, whichis in its first season. LIST OF CHAMPIONS. About sixteen titles changed hands, but in some cases last year's champions did not compete. The list of champions is as follows, with an asterisk indicating those who successfully defended their titles:— *C. H. Jenkins (Wellington), 100 yards and 220 yards. J. M. Watt (College Oia Boys), 410 yards. . . , •W. Ogg (Olympic)-, SSO yards. C. Gibbous (Wellington), one mile. M. Cooke (Athletic), three miles. F. Sharpley (H.8.P.8.), 120 yards hurdles. ' R. McLeod (Miramar), •140 yards hurdles. *I. Driscoll (H.8:P.8.), half-mile and one-mile walks. C. Robinson (Kiwi), junior 100 yards and 440 yards. M.L. Binning (College Old Boys), junior high jump. '.••...•.■■. ■ *T. J.. Crowe • (Wellington), high, jump and long jump.' L. Schneideman (Wellington), hop, step, anR. 'Johnson "(H.8.P.8.L pole vault. *P. Munro (Wellington), shot and discus. *R. Griffiths (Lower Hutt)," javelin. .J. McHolra (Wellington), hammer. University Club, one mile relay. Miss N. Wilson (H.8.P.8.), ladies' 100 yards. Miss M. Turton (H.8.P.8.), ladies' high jump. Miss E. Tong (H.8.P.8.), ladies' 80 yards hurdles. Hawkea Bay-Poverty Bay, ladies' 440 ya*rt! Ulmer (College Old Boys), 880 yards and 'one mile cycle. T.^Campbell (H.8.P.8.), three miles cjcle. STYLISH LADY SPRINTER. The high-light of the meeting was the flue.running of Miss Norma Wilson, the Gisborne gnl, -who represented New Zealand at the 1928 Olympic Games at Amsterdam. Miss Wilson, after a spell, has returned to the tiaclc this season; and she has made a triumphant return. She defeated Miss T. Keuch (Wellington), a member of New Zealand's 1932 Olympic Games team arid last year's champion, in the'loo yards ladies' championship by 2% yards, and later in the afternoon won the first heat and the final o£ the 100 yards ladies' handicap. Not only Miss Wilson's speed, but her style fired the enthusiasm of the crowd, and she was given' a great reception at the end of each run. Miss Kench has not shown her best form this season, and it was clear after the heats jn, the morning that she would have to strike her colours to the Gisborne girl." Misß E. Sharp , (Wellington) filled third place in the ladies' championship, running well and- finishing close up on Miss Kench. Under the conditions, Miss Wilson's times were smart. Doubtless but for the wind she would have equalled the New Zealand record, or, perhaps, would have broken it. Two other lady members of the Hawkes Bay : Poverty Bay team, Miss M.: Turton and Miss R. Tone, ,won titles, and the Bay ladies also romped home in the 440 yards relay. Among other good performances were the hop, step, and jump of 45ft l%in by L, Schneideman (Wellington), C. Gibbons's -iv-in in the one mile, M. Cooke's win in the three miles. E. McLeod's win in the 440 yards hurdles, J. M. Watt's ship and second place in the 22(T yards championship, the walking of 1.. Driscoll (the only starter in the two walking championships), and the wins by University in. the men's one mile medley relay and the Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay team in the ladies' 440 yards relay. GOOD QUARTER-MILE. W. Ogg (Olympic) retained his title comfortably enough in the 880 yards championship, "but did not show up as well as he was expected to do in the 440 yards championship, in which J. M. Watt (College Qld Boys) and L. E. Patchett (Marlborough) sprang something of a. surprise. Watt's time of 50 S-Ssec1 was a fine effort. ;. The sprint champion, C. H. Jenkins, who had had to ease up on his training owing to strain, had to battle hard to boat -F. H. Stephenson in the 100 yards championship, but he Won the 220 yards championship without being fully extended. R. Ulmer (College Old Boys) and C. Sutton (Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay) were the pick of the cyclists. Ulmer retained his titles of half-mile and one mile champion, but finished out of a place in the three . miles championship, won by I. Campbell (Hawkes Bay-Poverty Bay). Sutton, who did very well at the Hawkes BayPoverty Bay sub-centre championships, was placed in each of the three events. PARADE OF COMPETITORS. A spectacular feature of the afternoon programme was the march past of the competitors led by the Miramar Band. Points were awarded for attendance, appearance, and marching, and the judge (Mr. J. Duffy) placed the Kiwi Club, present holders of the A. C. Kitto Shield for this competition, first with 98 points out of the possible of 100. In the results, which are of the events decided after "The Post" mnt to press on Saturday, the key to the list of abbreviations is as follows:— Wellington A.A.C. (W.), Athletic Sports Club (A.), Olympic A.A.C. (0.1, Victoria University (V.), Kiwi A.A.C. (K.), Wairarapa sub-centre (Wai.).
