WOOLSTON WIN AGAIN

DUNKDIN, February 21 With at aggregate of 280% points in the two tesLpieces, the Woolston Band won the A J&.der,competition at the New Zealand Brass .Bands contest here today. Port Nicholson (Wellington) were runnersup with 274% points/ ' The final solo events were judged during the day. The. B-flat cornet (own choice) was won by G. Christie, who won the championship on Wednesday. The bass and side drum solos were also heard. Results are as follows:— First Second test. test: Aggregate. B. Briggs (Woolston Band), 30; . Speaking of both drum tests, the judge said that the had been set difficult tasks in sight-reading : compositions 'bristling with tricky arid broken times. It did not necessarily follow that the "best drummer-""was the best sight-reader.- The. judge demonstrated at a piano. the correct playing of the compositions, and offered some useful'hints on time signatures. In this event he had kept marking down. In his opinion the section should be used as a sort ©fvtrial' ground for aspirants for championship honours,- and., none save those with, some chance of winning should be permitted to enter for the championship,.
