NEW. MARINE -SUPERINTENDENT

In succession to.the late Captain W. A. R. Kershaw, Captain W. H, Hartman has been appointed marine superintendent at Wellington for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. Captain Hartman, who is one of the best known and most popular masters in the New Zealand-Southampton service, is at present at Wellington as master of the Akaroa, and he will take up his new duties early next month. Captain Hartman made his first visit to New Zealand in 1901, when he was an apprentice in the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Annesley. After gaining his certificates, Captain Hartman served in several shipping lines, including that of John T. Ronnie and Son in the South African trade, the British-India Steam Navigation Company,, and the Salvador Railway Company, of Central America. In 1912 Captain Hartman rejoined the service of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion' Company as second ofiicer of the Tainui, in which he served until, shortly after the outbreak of the Great War. He then served as a. lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve, and after a period of service in the Nort Sea he went to the Mediterranean in of the minesweeping trawler Whitby Abbey. He service in the North Sea he went to the Gallipoli campaign in command of a [flotilla of mine-sweepers. Later, and for the remainder of the war period, Ihe commanded H.M.S. Catania in the anti-submarine service. In 1919, Captain Hartman was appointed chief officer of the.Arawa, : and shortly afterwards he took command of the Pakeha. About five years later he was appointed Ito command the Tainui, and after a brief period, in that ship he, was appointed, in 1926, commander' of the Taniaroa when she was taken over by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. He retained command of the Tamaroa until the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company took over the Akaroa, and became her' first commander.
