DAY IN PARLIAMENT.

FULL GALLERIES HEAR DEBATE

4 Outstanding interest was taken in the House of Bepresentatives by the public last night, for the knowledge that the ex^Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart) -was to state his views on the Government's action in raising the Tate of exchange—an action which forced him to resign his portfolio-^drew the largest attendance which has been seen in the House during any part of the session. Not a single seat was to spare in the galleries, and over 300 people were turned away. With full appreciation of the interest which centred in his address, Mr. Stewart spoke slower than usual, and in a louder voice, using carefully prepared notes. His speech was non-pro-vocative, and was in fact a defence of his his views as an orthodox financier. TTia speech was given an attentive hearing by a full House. The other main item of interest in the day's proceedings was the setting out of Labour's policy by the DeputyLeader of the party (Mr. M. J. Savage). Like Mr. Stewart, he had carefully prepared his statements, and his remarks were closely followed byj the House. i

• Although urgency had been taken for the Banks Indemnity (Exchange) Bill, there were no signs of hurry about the proceedings. Both Mr. Savage and Mr. Stewart were granted liberal extensions of time, and most of the other speakers nsed the full half-hour allotted to them. During the sitting speeches weTe also made by the Hon. E. A. Bansom, Messrs. F. Jones (Labour, Dnnedin South), C. H. Clinkard (Government, Botorua), E. J. Howard (Labour, ChristcEurch South), W. Nash (Labour, Hutt),. the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Government, Wairarapa), Messrs. F. Lingstone (Labour, Waimarino), H. M. Campbell (Government, Hawkes Bay), and the Eev. C. Carr (Labour, Timaru). .'. .
