TELEPHONE RENTALS
COUNTRY SUBSCRIBERS
The matter of rural'telephone rentals was touched upon, briefly at to-day's meeting of the Dominion .Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, when a letter was received from the Post-master-General pointing out that telephone rentals in general were on the lowest possible basis having regard to the cost of the service. No reduction in the general scale of rentals was possible at present. Mr. J. A. McLeavey (Manawatu) said he thought a reduction should be made in the rural charges. In his ow.il district several subscribers had gone off the party lines, making. it harder for the others. He was satisfied the service would be much bettor supported if tho charge to everybody ■was £.5. The present system wa's most unsatisfactory to country subscribers.
Mr. E. H. Feist (Auckland) said it was quite obvious that the Post and Telegraph Department would not make a reduction unless it was absolutely forced to do so. He was confident that the position, would be aggravated to such aa extent by tho time the next half-yearly payment was.due that some action would have to be taken by the Department. '
The Dominion president {Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P.) agreed that the matter would probably right itself, and it wa,S decided to take no further action.
