TO BE CLOSED
KAIWARRA/ POST OFFICE
Owing to the small amount of business transacted, it is proposed to close down the post office at Kaiwarra, and in future postal facilities will be provided at a store in the township.
In the House of Representatives today, Mr. R. A. Wright (Government, Wellington Suburbs)' asked the Post-master-General (the Hon. A. Hamilton) whether-it was the Minister's intention to close the post office at Kaiwarra. If such a course was intended, what pro-! vision would be made for the -continuance of postal facilities now enjoyed by the residents?. Mr. Wright said the present office was a brick structure and the property of the Government.
"It is not intended to deny the people of Kaiwarra facilities for the transaction of postal business," said the Minister in his reply. "For some years the Kaiwarra post office has been conducted at an appreciable loss to the Department. Rather than increasing the business has fallen away steadily in recent years. The amount of business now transacted is very small indeed, the revenue earned for the June quarter of this year being only £27. In the circumstances the : Department is no longer warranted in continuing the conduct of the office by a permanent officer in the large two-storied building provided. Arrangements have been made, however, for the office to be transferred at an early date to the control of Mr. A. P. King, a local storekeeper, who has agreed to provide satisfactory accommodation for the office in his store."
