LT.COLONEL R. O. CHESNEY

The sudden death of LieutenantColonel Eobert Oswald Chesney in a private hospital in Lower Hutt early this morning ' has come as a shook to a large number of friends in that suburb and in the city. It was not thought that anything serious was the matter with him, and his death was entirely unexpected. Although unassuming in manner, he had a wide circle of acquaintances who will join in expressing their sympathies with his bereaved widow and family:

The late Lieutenant-Colonel Chesneywas'born'in 1884. In 1900 he entered the Permanent Eorce as a cadet, and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the following year. He saw active service during the later stages of tho South African War, receiving the Queen's Medal .with, two clasps. After being attached to' the Headquarters Staff in New Zealand,, further opportunity for active service came to him upon the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. He,was Brigade-Major with the first New Zealand Infantry Battalion, ana was subsequently Assistant Adjutant-General with the New . Zealand .Division. ■'.' At the time of his death he was on the'" reserve of officers in the Wellington Kegiment. The late Lieutenant-Colonel Chesney was a member of the'Hutt and Wellington Golf Clubs. He was one of the olQest, if not the oldes^, menibe- of the Hutt Club, and for a period of some ten years latterly was either club captain or an active member of the committee. Keen on course improvements, the bunkering scheme' at- tho Hutt Club owes a good deal to his initiative. He was a member of the New.Zealana Golf Council, and had the interests of the game, of which he was no mean exponent, , closely at heart. Popular and sound in his judgment, he was one.who did a'groat deal for golf in New Zealand.
