RATES COME IN WELL
The way out of the wood is not all covered yet, hut when members of the City Council-had presented to them last evening figures showing a very marked improvement in the position regarding the collection of arrears of rates from the last financial year the expressions of approval were general. The position is much brighter than had been anticipated. .
When the financial year 1931-32 ended on 31st March the amount of rates collected was £464,042 Is lid, 91.29 per cent, of the total demanded, leaving outstanding £44,299 10s Id. Since then, to Friday last, 31st July,. £ 11,155 Is 3d has been wiped off the arrears. A big sum is still owing, but when a cbmparison is made'with the position last year there is reason for satisfaction, for in the four months, April to 31stxJuly, 1931, only £6487 10s 4d could, be got from those who were; behind in their payments. . This ' year, therefore, the position •■ is better by nearly £5000. , / - . •
The demands for this year's rates are being sent out at present; the first batch was posted yesterday, another goes to-day, and the final batch will be posted to-morrow. With minor alterations they are the same as for last year. ._ ■' -
