REDUCTION OPPOSED

MEMBERS' SUBSCRIPTION

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") MASTERTON, This Day. By a margin of nine votes to four, the Mastortou Racing Club rejected, at its annual meeting ou .Friday evening, a notice of motion to reduce members' subscriptions from £2 to £1. While it was recognised that the reduction would probably be welcomed, the weight of opinion was that the move would not be in the interests of the club's finances.

The patron, Mr. J. lorns, presided over a good attendance of members, and a very optimistic view of the outlook was taken by several speakers.

Mr. S. J. W. Gill observed that the balance-sheet made a creditable showing indeed, considering the adverse times! After allowing for depreciation, they had really made a profit.

The club deserved to be congratulated, said Mr. J. M. iJames, especially on the result of the last meeting. They had approached that meeting ivith some trepidation, but they had had a successful meeting, and had made a small profit. However, they were not yet out of the wood. All clubs, even the largest, were up against it at present from a financial point of. view. The club had to be congratulated on weathering the storm so far, and he had enough confidence in the club and the public to say that they would soon see'the organisation on a sound footing again. Mr. A.-6. Law-son said that he certainly had more faith now than he had at this time last year. They had received good support for their last meeting; and had been able to break even. With careful management, he saw no reason why they should have any more anxiety. They should now be able to hold 'their own (Hear, hear.) The satisfactory position, shown was due to the hard .work of the stewards and officials, of the club, who- were deservin-* of every congratulation) said Mr. N. G. Whiteman. ......

The "balance-sheet, which showed a loss of £37 Os 3d on the year's working as compared with a loss of £576-"l4a lOd for the previous year, was adopted. The following officials- were re-elected unopposed:—Patron, Mr. J.. lorns; president, Mr. C. F. Vallance; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. J. Bennett and:AV. Cooperlion, timekeeper, Mr. L. S. Kicol; treasurer. Mr. C. F. Valiance-: auditor, Mr. G-. W. Sellar: stewards, Messrs. A. A. Cameron, F. E. Chalmers; F; E. Dorset S. J, W. Gill, J-. M; James, A. G. Lawson H. Smith, H. P. Hugo, H. Morrison, K. Cooper,-D. M.Mottgomery, J. H. Payton, R. 0. Smith, F. B. Vallance. It was decided that the stakes for the spring and autumn meetings should not exceed £3000. "
