MR. LANGS SECRETARY AS

SYDNEY, 28th July. Giving evidence to-day at the mechanical haro inquiry, Harold Me* Cauley, who was private secretary to the ex-Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, related conversations with an advertising agent, one Cruickshank, in regard to the Labour Party's election advertising." He said he told Mr. Cruickshank that ho did not think there would be any advertisings for- the Federal elections last year as" there, was no money In the party. Mr. Cruickshank* replied that he could get monoy from the tinhare people. To "this he (Mr. Mo Cauley) answered: "If yon can, then wo shall got, the copy later." After Mr. Lang's dismissal from office Mr, Cruickshank returned; and: asked about tho State campaign advertising. * Witness replied: 'JWe ato still hard up," whereupon Mr. Crnickshank Mid:'"lt is all xight. I have seen him (appar- ! ently meaning Swindell), He will stand the advertising to about £4000." , Mr. Monahan, K.C., who is assisting the Commissioner: "That was very rich generosity of him;" ' Witness: "Yes." Mr. Monahan: "Sid you ask any questions!" Witness: "No." Mr. Monahan: "Was not Swindell frequently in your office!" Witness: "Not frequently. The quostion of restoring dog Tacing originally came from Mr. Swindell, who emphasised that there was £200,000 revenue in it for tha , (jtovernmenV at a time when inonoy was badly needed." Mr. Monahan: "You led kirn to beHove tho legislation would go through 1" Witness: "Yes, without any trouble." Tho hearing was adjourned.
