RED CROSS SOCIETY

NEW ZEALAND STATUS

MEETING OF COUNCIL

At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Bed Cross Society yesterday afternoon, the chairman (the Hon. Dr. W. & Collins, M.L.C.) said tho society had now been officially recognised by His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General's proclamation and by the International Bed Cross Cbniniittee. Congratulations had been received from the British Bed Cross Society.

■Sir Georgo (Auckland) explained that there was at present no local branch of the society in Auckland. The question of -whothor it was desirable to have a branch was somewhat different there from the rest of the Dominion because they had followed definitely -tho lines of forming a branch of tbo British Bed Cross Society, and later a joint committee. Therefore, if anything was to bo done to bring Auckland into association with the New Zealand Bed Cross Society it would involve the organisation of a local branch in Auckland. The" arrangoments of those doing the work in Auckland had been co good that there was doubt as to the wisdom of establishing any other body that might como into competition with the existing organisation. He understood that some, agreement had been arranged between the New Zealand Bed Cross Society and tho Order of St. John for the setting up of a joint council which would, he supposed, to soino extent supervise the work that was to be done by the organisations in the different centres. Ho wished to sit at the present meeting as an observer and report to the Auckland committee on tho work that was being done. CONSTITUTION AND RULES. Beferencc was made by several members to tho arrangements being carried out by the Red Cross Society and tho Order of St. John in regard to the administration of the £30,000 fund.

The general secretary.(Captain M. S. Galloway) said he had received the following letter from tho secretary of the Order of St. John:—

"The Dominion Council of St. John congratulates your society on receiving, with our approval, the recognition of the Government of New Zealand as the national Red Cross.Society for the Dominion, and assures you that although we are a separate organisation, we hope to work in full co-operation with you. As you know, a proposed agreement has been xlrawn up, and we, in New Zealand, have approved of it subject to the consent of the, Order in England and the British Red Cross Society."

The chairman remarked that when the Order of St. John in England gave its consent to the joint administration of the £30,000, the joint work in connection with that fund could be carried out. Mr. C. R. J, "Williams (Ohristchureh) moved that tho constitution and rules be adopted. Mr. H. LaTgo (Hawkcs Bay) drew attention to the delay which had occurred in regard to adopting the constitution. In- ■ Hawkes Bay ... they had been waiting for further information in respect to that matter. There had been differences of opinion between the Order of St. John and the Red Cross for years/ ■ Tho Red Cross Socioty ehould get its rules into operation immediately. ' After some discussion, the constitution and rules were adopted. The Hon. Dr. Collins was elected president of the council, and Major J. Abel was elected chairman of the central executive committee.
