LONDON, 30th June.
Speaking on behalf of ,the Prince of Wales at the Canadian dinner at the Savoy Hotel to the Ottawa delegates, Prince Geprge markedly im-: pressed his hearers by sounding a call to the Empire to give the world' a lead towards an outlet from its distresses. He said that the future' welfare of the Empire depended on the success of the Ottawa Conference. The recognition of equality of status" of the Dominions could not be bet* ter implemented than by holding the | conference in a Dominion ' capital.' jThe delegates should make every effort at Ottawa to hearten the world in concerting measures in which, other countries might co-operate. The Empire could give a lead in the right direction. If the upward movement • of wholesale prices could be started,' the benefit to the; producers would be far greater than any rheasures more exclusively inspired. The outbreak i, of trade restrictions threatened to strangle world trade. The Empire internally was relatively free from these causes of distress. Could she not give a lead which would restore" confidence?
The Prince wished the representa*: tives Godspeed and a full lneasu;:* of success. ■
