GENERAL OPTIMISM
TRADE AND COMMERCE
EXCITEMENT ON 'CHANGE

RUGBY, Ist July. The optimism engendered by the Govlernment's announcement was evident in commercial and industrial pirclcs throughout the country to-day. Immediate beneficial results to trade- aTe anticipated from the distribution of the upecial bonus of one per cent.' to all who convert this montn, and tho net saving of £23,000,000 effected by the interest reduction gives added hopes of lower taxation.
On the Stock Exchange thero was remarkable activity as a sequel to the conversion announcement. Almost unprecedented advances, in Government stocks were recorded, the most notable being the rise of 4 per cent. Consols, which, after reaching 109, closed at 107, which is 5J points over yesterday's closing price.
Other British gilt-edged securities made corresponding advances, and in other sections a sharp rise occurred in industrial debentures, preference stocks and ordinary shares, many of which were more activo than for several months past.
