RUGBY FOOTBALL

TRANSFERS OF PLAYERS

A CLUB'S PROTEST

The position with regard to the transfer of players from one club to another after the season has cdnimeilcd was discussed at some length by the. Management Committee of the Wellington Eugby Union at its weekly meeting last night. The committee decided previously that after this week no transfers would be granted this season except under special circumstances.

Last night's discussion arose out of a letter from the Wellington Club, which protested against the principle of transfers, although the club had approved applications from two members who had already played for the club this season. To the possible suggestion that the club had the remedy in its own hands, the club replied that players were liable to become disgruntled if they were dropped from the team in which they were first included-. W the players knew- thjjt they could hot obtain' transfers, they' Would settle down-ii^ lihsif: ouiai. chjfesi. .■ ■' Tie., cjjajrmitn. Asr.. Personally, he was inclined to think that H both the clubs concerned approved a transfer, the committee should approve of it. It was unfair for a club to throw the responsibility on to the committee.

Other members of the committee supported Mr. Prendeville's view, but when the applications were under consideration it was stated that'at least two of the Wellington Club players had played for the club this season, and it was decided to grant the following transfers on the condition that the players concerned have ttot already played for the dubs from which they wished to be transferredi-!-A. G. Julius, from Johnsohville to Onslow; W. Riley, fr6m Athletic to Welling, ton; W. D. Gumbley, Wellington to University; B. J. Mclvor and G. W. M. Riddell, from Wellington to Petone; E. Price, from Institute to Wellington; A. C. Pryde, from Wellington to Poneke; E. Smith, Mclrose-Selwyn to Oriental; R. Brown, senior to third grade; G-. Fill, A. Walls, and N. McKay, from Onglow to Kaiwarra; J. Howard, from Wellington to SeatOun; P. C. Donoghue, from Miramar to SeatOun; T. R. C. Muir, from Poneke to University. F. L. Hayes applied for a transfer from. Taita to Hutt, as he wished to play in an age-limit grade. The Taita Club opposed the transfer, and it was decided to advise the dub that the union wished to place no obstacle in the way of a player who wished to play in an age-limit grade for which he was eligible. LOSS OF TIME. Mr. J. King referred to an incident which had occurred in the course of a match in which the referee had allowed play to be held up for three minutes while a player left the field to receive attention; although play was supposed to proceed as soon as the player left the field. In the course of a. discussion on the matter it was! stated , that although play could be held up forVthree minutes on account of injuries or other causes, play should proceed as. soon as the player left the field. It was considered that there waa a tendency for play to be held up too frequently for unnecessary reasons, and it was decided to request the referees to see that such delays were eliminated as far as possible.
