'.'■. ■ In Aid' of the Red Cross. ■ Members of the' Wellington Lyecum Club will stage a three-act play, handing the proceeds to Red .Cross Society. Tho. activities of the Bed Cross in this community are widely known, and~\owing to the drain on its resources owing to .tho large number of families in distress through the prevailing depression the society's, funds are sadly in need of replenishing. In view of the object for which the play is being .staged-it' is hoped that the function will enjoy a wide patronage. A Successful Dance. It certainly showed an admirable spirit among girls that the dance held by the staff of. Kirkcaldio and Stains last night in aid of the Y.W.C.A. campaign, to assist girls, particularly those out of work, should have been carried out so successfully, in. spite of tho damage done to the windows downstairs. The ballroom was beautifully decorated with great bowls of Iceland poppies arranged on small tables placed cabaret fashion, andl the supper-room was also artistically decorated with flowers. ' Tho music provided .by Rudolph's orchestra was a pleasing feature, and a modern dance was given by Miss Margaret O'Connor, and Mr. Priestley. There were many guests present,' including some of the directors of the company. '. A Pleasant Afternoon. . A very pleasant afternoon was given yesterday by Mrs. W. H. Rose, of .Clifton terrace, in honour of her sister-in-law, Mrs. C. V. Houghtou, of Auckland. The guests present were mostly old friends of Mrs. Houghton, and there was a delightful meeting o,f "old Wellingtonites." The rooms were charmingly arranged with flowers, the. central bowl on tho embroidered cloth in the dining-room being filled .with fine chrysanthemums. Mrs. Rose was in a handsome frock of pearl grey chiffon embroidered in English style ;• Mrs. Houghton wore pillar-box scarlet georgette, with pearl ornaments; and Miss Marjorie Boso's becoming frock was of pale periwinkle blue crepe do chine. Among those present were Mesdames T. Ward,. P. James, T. B. Lawsou, W. H. Price, Bristow, A. E. Brown, K. Kirkcaldie, Misses MacGregor (2) and Seed (2). Nightingale Celebration. Part of the Florence Nightingale celebrations arranged by tho Red Cross Society is a dance which will take place to-morrow evening at the Adelphi Cabaret, when card tables for those who prefer to play_ will be arranged also. It

is hoped that many will recognise this part of the celebrating effort, as it is in aid of the work of the society which would have met with the deepest sympathy on the part of the great lady who carried a "lamp of health.and hope for a world which needed so sorely in her time. Looking back on the 112 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale it is wonderful to realise the difference made to the world by her brave effort in coming forth from the extremely private and circumscribed life of an English girl, into the public eye. The Bed Cross is making an admirable effort to bring her and her work before the people of the city, and .the dance is to be a practical assistance in aid of their work.
