A CHURCH JUBILEE

♦ — •The jubilee of 'St. James's Presbyterian .Church, Wellington, is being celebrated this month with special services and meetings. An interesting little booklet has been brought out, describing the history of the church, with photographs of ministers and .bujldings. The' site of .thp present building was purchased in 1881 for £350, _ and in the following year the Adelaide road schoolroom was recognised as "a pieaching station. Mr. Robert Hopkirk was the first'missionary in Newtown, and in 1883 -his work was carried on by Mr. Jimes 'McNeil. In 1884 a call was accepted by the Rev. .T. Kennedy Elliott. He resigned in 1886. The work was taken up for a'time by the Rev. J. SmeHie', and then by Mr..J. B. Finlay. In 1888 a call was extended to, the Rev. W. Shirer, who was minister for 41 years until 1929. The work is now in the charge of the Rev. W. R. Milne. - - In 1889' the building was enlarged, after a proposal to remove it and to sell the rite had been -rejected. In 1892 the present manse was built, and ~in 1900 the new church was completed.' -A Bible Class hall-was added in . 1907, and-in 1911' the Sunday School was built. The fine pipe organ was installed in 1921. The'work has been extended to* Island Bay, Melro'se, and adjacent districts. •
