| QUAIL PROSPECTS POOR

NELSON, 2nd May. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Mr. -Ernest T. Savage, a well-known i Nelson business man, at the ago of 66 . years. This morning Mr. Savage was ( at work as usual and was apparently ,in good health, but just before 11 i o'clock ho complained of feeling un- • well and was taken to his homo, where i he died about an hour and a half after- . wards. Mr. .Savage, who -was head ol" the paperhauging and house decorating business bearing his name, was for i several years on the dircctoiato of the Nelson Permanent Building Society and in the past was a prominent mem- ' her and cxibitor in the Nelson Poulry Association shows. Ilel eaves a > widow and family of two sons and a daughter—Messrs. Stanley Savage " (Nelson), Roy Savage (Wellington), and Miss Muriel Savage (Nelson). The open game season commenced in Nelson to-day. A "Well-known local sportsman stated that the- prospect so far as quail was concerned was poor. He put this clown to the depredations of tho hedgehog, which eats the eggs . and tho young quail. Around Nelson hills he had come across scores of hedgehogs, which, he considers, are- tho worst pest quail encounter, although stoatsand weasels also take their toll. Ho said quail wore also very scarce in tho Marlborough Province. Two Rugby players had legs broken on Saturday. One -was Norman Biggs, who, playing full-back for Rival seniors against-Pirates at Brightwatcr, kicked at 'the ball simultaneously with ,'a player of'the opposito side. Tho other injured man was Keith Goodman, who "was" playing ia a match at Motueka. Both aro in tho Nelson Hospital making satisfactory progress. In a splendid Rugby game on Trafalgar Park "on Saturday Old Boys defeated Nelson by 8 points_ to 6. Nelson played a 3-4-1 scrum formation, wjiil.e Old Boys, a heavier pack, had more success with a pack "of 3-2-3., For Old Boys, Snodgraes kicked a' penalty goal converted a try scored by Busch as the result of a sparkling back -movement. McKenzie scored a try for Nelson, after all the backs handled over three-parts of the length of the field. McLean dived across the Hue from a line-out to score Nelson's other thiee points. . At Brightwater, Pirates beat "Rivals by <5 points to 3.,) ' •
