U.S. PRESIDENCY

DEMOCRATIC SELECTION

ROOSEVELT AND SMITH

NEW YOKE, 26th April,

Incomplete returns of Tuesday's primary elections in Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania indicate that Mr. Franklin Roosevelt and Hr. Alfred Smith, Democratic aspirants for the Presidency, divided the honours. Mr. Roosevelt apparently won a substantial majority of Pennsylvania's 76 Presidential nominating delegates, while Mr. Smith' made a clean sweep of Massachusetts's 36 delegates. Counting previous victories^ Mr. Roosevelt retains a commanding lead of pledged delegates. However, the decisive defeat in Massachusetts is a severe blow to his prestige.
