j-: The Smith Faniily of 'Wellington has -worked out a scheme to make' relief workers' camps more attractive, which ...it will undertake if tho Government "will grant a permit to hold an art union, application for which has been made. The Smith Family has undertaken to place an order for 1000 pairs of' boots and. other necessities as soou as the permit is' received. If the request for 'a permit is granted, the "'Smith Family proposes to allocate funds "for relief either by. establishing of the family in all cejitres or Try operating through the Mayors of the cities and principal-. towns. The . aim is to provide an outfit for every .'needy man who is willing, to enter a relief camp, and to appoint a social secretary to attend to the welfare of the men in each camp. This official would be.provided with a marquee, and it would be his function to organise recreation and cater for reading and educational facilities where desired. During March the Smith Family in Wellington1 dealt with more than 3000 •r. cases of .relief, and applications for exceed this number. ~
