TREATY WITH CANADA
SUBJECT TO REVIEW
AT OTTAWA CONFERENCE
It now transpires that the trade treaty between New Zealand and Canada was signed on Saturday. The signatories-on behalf of New Zealand were the Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes) and the Minister of Customs (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart), and those on behalf of Canada were the Canadian Prime Minister (Mr. E. B. Bennett) and the Minister of Trade and Commerce (Mr. H. H. Stevens). Facsimile documents were signed in New Zealand and in Canada, and these will bo exchanged by mail. . . . .
The Prime Minister explains that the agreement will be subject to review at the forthcoming conference s at Ottawa. He said he was prepared to agree that the sister Dominion would gain more from the arrangement than would New Zealand, since New Zealand's main product—butter—could be undersold in the Canadian market, irotwithstanding the lower duty. However, the treaty" paved the way for th~e friendliest of negotiations between the sister Dominions at the Ottawa Conference. He had no doubt that' Canadian traders in New Zealand would welcome the result of the negotiations.
Legislation ratifying the treaty will be passed by the- House of Bepresentatives at to-day's sitting, after resolutions effecting the- alterations to the tariff schedules have been agreed to.
