SERVICE ON GALLIPOLI
BIRDWOOD'S TRIBUTE .' SACRIFICE IN CAUSE (Received 26th April, 10 a.m.) ■LONDON, 25th.April. General Sir Granville Eyrie, Australian High Commissioner, presided at the British Empire Service League's Anzae Day luncheon. The attendance included Brigadier-General J. H. Carman ,and the New Zealander. LieutenantColonel Fitzherbert. Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood, Tcsponding to the toast of those who served on Gallipoli, said that the j world provided no better examples of real democracies than Australia, and New Zealand, who would never fight unless they believed the cause( righteous, yet their men gave' their lives willingly on Anzac, knowing that they fought in/a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook the amazing bravery of the TwentyNinth Division, but' Anzacs fought with almost reckless bravery. ■
