PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Petone Borough Council met last night. The Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) presided, and there were also present councillors V. A; Noble, J. W. Longman, A. Scholefield, E. T. E. Hogg, J. C. Burns, C. P. Brockelbank, V. E. Jacobson, and R. W. Toomath.
The borough engineer . (Mr. C. ; L. Jackson) was appointed to represent the council on the.Technical Committee set up by the Town Planning Institute.
The Commissioner of Unemployment wrote -that trees for planting Were available to local bodies from the State Forestry Department for tho cost, of lifting, packing, and freight. He urg^ed local bodies to give tree planting work to tho unemployed. The caretaker of the' Recreation Ground reported that suitable places for tree-planting were North and McEwan Parks, the Korokoro Domain, and the beach. The council referred the matter to its officers for a report at the\ next meeting. Bequests from tho Wellington football Association and the Wellington Eugby League for grounds on North Park were referred to the Beserves Committee.
The Pononga and the St. Augustine's Tennis Clubs wrote protesting against the erection by the council of men's conveniences on' North Park, near their courts, and a representative of the latter club was present in support of the protest. The suggestions made to obviate the trouble were referred to the Beserves Committee and the Borough. Engineer, with power to act.' Permission was granted to tho Pctone District Nursing Committee to use the bandstand and a cricket pitch on the Recreation Ground, on either 26th March or 2nd April. Tho committee intends to have the Salvation Army Band in attendance, and will take up a collection. The council's permission was given, subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the Cricket Club.
Eeporting. on the relief works in the borough, the Borough Engineer aaid the raising of the lower portion of the Becreation Ground was progressing as quickly as possible with the transport available.
The sanitary inspector's report said that no cases of infectious diseases were notified in February. Permits for buildings to the value of £.562 were issued in February. "In work carried- out under No. 5 scheme the council has been assisting a number of bodies, mainly school committees," said the Finance Committee's report. "The committee is concerned at the amount owing to the council for work done, and has asked the Town Clerk to communicate with these organisations, stating that work will cease in seven days unless the accrued liability is met." It was deckled by the council to suggest that the administration of relief works for authorised bodies (other than the council) should be done by the Unemployment Board itself instead of by the council, the advice of the council's officers still to be available.
