ATHLETIC COUNCIL
REINSTATEMENT POINT
LETTER FROM I.A.A.F.
Because of the special circumstances existing in the Dominion, the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association is seeking to obtain from the International Amateur Athletic Federation a special.dispensation in regard to the reinstatement of athletes who have broken their amateur status unwittingly or have not had the opportunity of previously running as amateurs through the non-existence of an amateur club in their district. A letter on the subject was sent some time ago to the 1.A.A.F., and yesterday afternoon, at a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association, a reply was read from Mr. J. Edstrom, president of the 1.A.A.F., stating that the question would be considered by the world controlling body. Mr. Edstrom said he would take up the matter at a meeting of the Council of the 1.A.A.F., to be held in Los Angeles at the time of the Olympic Games, and if ,the N.Z.A.A. and C.A. was represented at the meeting an opportunity would be given its delegate to speak on the subject.
Another letter from the I.A.A.F. gave the dates for the eleventh congress of: the association at. Los Angeles as 29th July, and Bth and 9th August. An invitation was extended to the N.Z.A.A. and C.A. to be represented.
The secretary (Mr. L. A. Tracy) reported that replies had been received from, the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago Centres that they were not in favour of the council inviting the RandwiekKensington (Sydney), team of athletes to visit New Zealand this season. It was decided to reply to the Randwick-Kensing-ton Club, through the Australian Amateur Athletic Union, that the association regretted that, owing to the circumstances prevailing at^the.present time, it was unable to see its way to finance a team from Australia. : '
■Under the ' scheme introduced ■ for the encouragement of field events in the principal secondary schools of the Dominion, the Otago and West Coast (North Island) Centre's were granted £5 each for the provision of gear.
.■•;.': Acknowledgment and appreciation :of ■ their appointments as representatives of Ithe association in England ;and Canada respectively were contained in letters from Dr; A. E. Porritt and Mr. M; M. R6binson.. Dr. Porritt added: "I .wish you a most-, successful year and trust that the Los Angeles representation will be good and strong."
W. C. Bruce (Southland) and' A. B. J. Fraser (Duuedin) were re-instated as amateurs.
