The Petone Borough Council niet on Monday. . There were present the Mayor {Mr.D. McKenzie) and Councillors V. A. Noble, J. W." Longman, V. E. Ja.cobson, H. A. Ryder, A. Scholefield, E. T. E. Hogg, R. W. Toomath, J. C Burns, arid C. P. Brockelbank. ';. ' ' The Petone . A.A_ and '.. C: Club was granted the use of the Recreation .Ground for a sports.meeting on sth March. The Central Bowling Club requested the council to co-operate in the preparation of land for the laying down of hard courts on the central reserve.. The. matter-was referred to the, Works Committee; ' s The Eastern' Ratepayers' Association requested .that the danger" arising from loose metal at street corners should be removed, and asked what steps were being taken in regard to the danger of the eastern area being flooded. The first.matter was referred to the Works Committee. In regard'to the flood, danger, the Mayor said that a. request _ for assistance from the Unemployment Board had been turned down. However, the-, council had now made the Public Works Department an offer of £1000 if the Department would, ■with unemployed labour;, tarry out a scheme for storm-water drainage for the area. The offer of the' £1000 -was made with the idea of bringing the wage up to standard rates' of pay. It was hoped the Government would consider the proposal favourably. ' "•''■ . -■■■-. A letter from the association protesting against the 10 per. cent, -penalty on rates Vras "received."-. . / It was reported that building permits to the value of ..£360 were issued during the month. '..-..'-..-,.. ■ The Works Committee reported that after inspection it was satisfied.that garages at Korbkord "must only be erected on the roadway to the approval: of the council, that rentals should be paid, and that the buildings should, be to .the satisfaction' of the borough .engineer. Councillor. Ryd.er^ said he had been informed that two Korokoro men who had remained at work -during 'the 7 strike trouble had been refused work by the foreman at Korokoro, and • had to ' come down to jobs at Petone. The Mayor said that if that was true tie foreman was acting wrongly. He would have, inquiries made. ; . Jacdbson agreed that this was the.righit thing to do, and moved that a letter of appreciation -be sent to the executive thanking it 7 for the good eervice it was rendering. . -'j, .: The association advised that it had pointed out to the' Government the heavy burden imposed on local bodies by the JSTo. 5 Scheme,1 and that it had asked that a scheme should be devised which would not be a burdenj.on local body finance. A letter agreeing with this view -was received from Mr. W. Nash, M.P.' " The Works Committee was requested to report on the street lighting in- William Btreet.-on improvements- to various footpaths, including. the_.stretch between the Gear Company's shop and the station, and on-a better'-system'of repairing the street ■ in.
