DOCTORS SENTENCED
LUBECK T.B. TRAGEDY
COURT'S FINDING
(Received Sth February, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, 7th February. In the Lubeek hospital case in which 75 children lost their lives through aa alleged mistake on the part of the authorities in the Calmette T.B. treatment, Professor Deyeke was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, and Dr. Alstaedt to fifteen months. Frau Klotz, a woman assistant, was acquitted. Deyeke pleaded that a higher poSver against which humans were helpless was responsible for the tragedy. The Court gave judgment that wrong preparations were used in the inoculation of children.
Professor Deyeke was accused of having caused the death of seventy-five babies at Lubeek through ■ negligence in administering calmette T.B. vaccine. He was charged with having administered virulent T.B. germs in error whea he thought he was giving the vaccine. Professor Deyeke was head of the Lubeek General Hospital, Dr. Klotz was head of the Children's Hospital, and Dr. Alstaedt head of the Health Department. A nursing sister named Anna Schultz was also charged. In all, 253 babies received the treatment, and besides the 75 deaths 100 were seriously ill.
