BIG PUSH PLANNED

ANXIETY IN SHANGHAI

FEAR OF FALL OF CITY

SHANGHAI, 7th February.

Though the Japanese headquarters will not state their intentions, military observers believe they are preparing for a big push to begin directly reinforcements, including a mixed brigade which will arrive to-day, are available.

Considerable anxiety is evinced as the result of a new line taken by Japanese propaganda. The Japanese Press Union has issued a statement that Japanese residents are complaining in Tokio that it is unsafe for Japanese even to walk in the business districts of Shanghai for fear of assault.

The suggestion is that the municipal police aro unable to maintain law and order, which is untrue. During the past week there have been rumours that the Japaneso would take over the whole of the International Settlement which, if attempted, inevitably would lead to gravo complications.

According to the Japanese 3000 regulars have occupied the Woosuug forts, which aro now ruined. The Eastern Extension and Pacific cables were cut on Thursday afternoon during tho bombardment of Woosnng, and aro still unrepaired because of the hostilities.

Severe losses have accompanied tho Chapei activities. The official estimates are 50 Japanese killed and scores wounded. The Chinese 'losses are heavier, and more than COO have been wounded.

Many shells have fallen in the foreign parts of Shanghai during the past three days' bombardment. Several Chineso havo been killed, and one Japanese civilian and four foreigners injured.
