GAR WOOD'S MISS AMERICA IX.
CLAIM FAILS'BY SMALL MARGIN ; „ (Beccivcd 29th January, 11 a.m.) DETROIT, 28th January. Raising the question whether Comniiindor Gar Wood yesterday exceeded Mr.'Kayo Don's record by a margin sufficient to entitle him to tho world's record, Mr. W. D. ICdenburn, chairman of the .racing committee of the Yachtsmen 3a Association o£ America, said on Thursday that tho application for official sanction of Commander Wood's achievement would be withheld temporarily. Mr. Edenburn announced later that Commander Woqcl had apparently failed to establish the record by a margin of .08 nautical miles an hour. Mr. Edenburn made the 'announcement following the receipt, of a cablegram from M. Maurice Pauwaert,-secre-tary of the International Motor-Yacht-ing Union, advising him that Mr. Don's record was 95.78 miles an hour. Mr. Edeuburn previously had figured Commander Wood's speed at 96.20 nautical miles an hour.- To obtain a world's record, he said, the interrr.tional rules required the old record t<.- fee exceeded by at least half a nautical milo an hour. He added that tho national record would be certified for Commander Wood.
