TRANSPORT WORKERS
The Wellington transport workers' picnic was held at Newtown Park yesterday, and was attended by about 3000 adults and children. The picnic, which was fav-l oured by perfect weather, was a great success.. Those who did not participate in the various competitions watched such varied attractions an Highland dancing, wrestling, and adults' and children's races. It was not without some misgivings that the committee decided to hold the picnic at all this year, but the results, from an attendance point of view, more than, justified the decision to carry on, despite'the depression. Yesterday the '38 members of the committee, subdivided into various complete branches, were working hard all the time in meeting the countless demands made on their services. About half a ton of sweets were distributed, 400 gallons of soft drinks were consumed,, as well as 100 gallons of ice cream and '100 gallons of milk.
Most of the day was devoted, to children's sports, and these, as well as the adult events and the Highland dancing and wrestling, drew excellent entries. A great deal o£ credit for the picnic's success was due to the efforts of the honorary picnic secretary, Mr. R. J. Seal, who was assisted by scores of helpers.
