BIG FIELDS COMPETE

CHAMPIONS IN ACTION

Falling on a Friday, the thirteenth annual sports meeting of the Paraparaumu Amateur Sports Club held yesterday et Paraparaumu could hardly have been expected by superstitious persons to have been favoured with fine weather. RaiD was foretold-by dull clouds in the early morning, and as a result the attendance was. only about 700—a very, much smalle:: number than in previous years. Soon after the sports had started a shower o£ rain accompanied by a cold northerly wind made the conditions unpleasant for both competitors and spectators. Fortunately the rain lifted and a very interesting programme of track and field events was witnessed in comparative comfort. Interest to the meeting was added by the arrival at 1.58 p.m. of ;Mr. H. S. Alpe, the veteran walker,.who left the General Post Office, Wellington,, at 6.15 a.m. to walk the 37 miles to Paraparaumu. When he arrived at.the ground after a record journey of 7 hours 34 minutes he was greeted with great applause and afterwards presented with a cup by..Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., on behalf of 'the Kiwi Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. In making the presentation Mr. Vie\i said that Mr. Alpe's efforts had been devoted almost entirely to collecting money for iCharities. On the occasion of his walk .from Napier r to Wellington he. raised £500; and. the total amount he. had realised for charities was Over £5000. :. ' The New Zealand champions, G. Bayne and Miss T. Kench, were seen in action, and although no records -were broken the times registered were, under the circumstances, quite good. One of the most interesting events was the one-mile open handicap, which was won by Bayne, who started from scratch and gave the limit man, C.,11. Brown, 95 yards. Bayne commenced to rapidly overhaul the others at the beginning of the second lap, and took the lead m the third; Brown and McLeod were-close behind, however; and -at the start of the last- lap the former winner ??Mv in ,ahead of Bayne agai n- Brown held the lead nntil he •• entered the straight, when he was passed easily by tfayne and beaten for second place by MeLeod. . . Bayne, who came second -in > the 880 yards open handicap, shared the senior cup with B. ; Lauer, who won the 880 yards handicap and came second ■in the 440. .yajds_ event.^ The; junior cup was retained by.
