HAMILTON, This Day. Hawkcs Bay made a good start in the Hawke Cup challenge match against Souf.h Auckland, commenced yesterday.

The visitors compiled 317 in the first innings after batting attractively for the greater part of the day. A feature.,of the innings was the brilliant display by M. O'Brien, who made 123 not out after being at the wickets for three hours. The partnership between O'Brien and T. Reaney, who was caught on the boundary after making C 7 runs, yielded 109 runs. F. Finlayson made 31, and T. Cavanagh 22. The best bowling for South Auckland was registered by Barnett, who took two wickets for 26 runs, Lissette two for 27, and Winger three for 63.
