BRABIN SHIELD
CANTERBURY V. WELLING-
TON
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRLSTCHURCH, Ist January. Dramatic changes in the fortunes of the opposing sides marked the first day's play in a match between Canterbury and Wellington junior (under 21) teams for the Brabin Shield, commenced at Lancaster Park to-day. Canterbury, the holders, opened the batting in miserable fashion, but good I work by the tail-enders saw the total
reach 178. Wellington had scored over 70 of the runs required for the first innings' lead without the loss of a wicket, but the fine bowling and fielding by the Canterbury boys led to the collapse of the visitors, who were dismissed for 123. Canterbury has a useful lead for the final day's play, and in the event of the match not being completed, retains the shield by a win on the first innings. Canterbury's batting was surprisingly unstable, but the worst feature was the running between the wickets. H. E. Cooke (captain;, who batted for the greater part of the innings for a valuable 39, was one of the worst offenders, and was concerned in two run-outs, which resulted in the dismissal of two batsmen who_ looked good for many more runs. Wellington's bowling and fielding were very steady. McLean kept an excellent length and direction for a long spell. Mallard (the most successful wickettaker) impressed as a googly bowler of promise. Few finer batsmen of under 21 years have been seen at Lancaster Park than McLean, who, with Duffy, gave Wellington such a good start. He played all bowlers with confidence, using a beautiful cover drive. Once these were separated none of the batsmen faced the Canterbury fast bowlers, McDonald and Andrews, with confidence. The former sent down a very fast ball for a long spell, and kept the batsmen continually on the defensive. The Canterbury fielding was first-class, and some remarkable catches led to Wellington's collapse. The following are the detailed scores: — CANTERBURY. First Innings. H. E.
