CHINESE IN DISORDER

RETREAT FROM CHINCHOW
SHANGHAI, 31st December.
The Chinese continued their evacuation of Chinehow, Manchuria V provincial, walled, capital, to-day. -As the Japanese pushed forward on two fronts the Chinese defences grumbled in. disorder before the superior equipment and tactics of,the invaders. ■.-, ■-'~,' Private messages from Chinehow state that the residents have devised a queer air-raid' warning 'system, including bell ringing, factory whistling, and the banging of dishpans, whereupon the people scurry to cover. Mr. Eugene Chen, China's new firebrand Foreign Minister, has started well. It is stated that' upon1 the new Government's assumption of office tomorrow, orders will be issued to Marshal Chang-hsueh-liang, formei Manchurian Governor, to hold Chinchow at all costs. ■■■;'• ' .-;. China to-day- dispatched to the League of Nations vigorous protests regarding the Chinchow happenings, declaring that Japan's activities constituted serious aggravation and requesting the League to instruct Japan to refrain from further aggressions.' v
