A NEW PHASE
MURDER OF A WITNESS
CALCUTTA, 31st December,
A new phase in terrorism was reached in Calcutta last night when Bangal Ashutosh Neogy was called from his bed by a man claiming to be a friend, and was shot dead on the doorstep. The murderer escaped.
Neogy was a Crown witness in a recent armed robbery case in which several Indians were sentenced.
Tho topic of city talk this morning was an incident in the Grand Hotel last night when the Viceroy was dining with tho European Association. It was known that escaped terrorists from Chittagong were in Calcutta and had threatened to shoot some officials before they were caught.
Nearly 200 police- guarded the precincts of the hotel, and while dinner was proceeding: a, well-dressed Indian was seen by a European sergeant slinking along a corridor.
When' challenged he refused to give his name arid mis searched. A loaded revolver was found in his pocket.
The Indian was roughly' handled and taken to police headquarters, where inquiry proved that he was tho private secretary to a maharajah residing in the Hotel.'
