; - SYDNEY, This Day. Pine weather favoured the New Tear's Day holiday in Sydney, but peoplo outback sizzled in a continuance of the terrific heat, which was intensified by grass and bush fires.
The annual Highland gathering, one of the main fixtures, was held at tho Sydney Showground, while there were tremendous crowds in the surf at the beaches^ Little sign of the depression was noticeable anywhere.
