NOISY SYDNEY
MR. SGULLIN'S LAST
MESSAGE
SYDNEY, Ist Jannary. The New Year ws.3 ushered in with the usual noisy demonstrations.: Cool winds succeeded a scorching day. Despite the heat the city was thronged all day with business people and pleasure-seekers. After late shopping the streets were full for hours, and many people danced the Old 'Year out.
Midnight unleashed a crescendo of noise, brazen-throated' klaxons and ships' sirens 'combining with bells and the more homely sound-producing agencies in suburban areas to drive away the last evil spirits of 1931, leaving a calmer and more promising atmosphere for the infant year's start. Mr. J. H. Scullin, in a. messago to the people before relinquishing office as Prime Minister, conveyed a wish of good-will to Australia with the hope that the nation would enter a new period, of happiness and prosperity in 1932. ■-■-"■■
