FRENCH SURTAX BILL
DEFEATED IN DEPUTIES

The Chamber of Deputies, by 325 votes to 261, decided to refer tho Surtax Bill back to the Agriculture Committed for amendment.
The defeat does not involve tlio Gov> crnment's resignation.
The increase was criticised as tend' ing to raise tho cost of living, thus in> tonsifying tho economic crisis.
Franco's Budget proposals included increases of from 2 to 4 per cent, in the existing surtax, and 2 pur cent, on imports from "countries with depreciated currencies."
The Finance Minister, M. Pietri, said that owing to tiie exchange crisis, there was a danger of the market being flooded with a mass of imports—foodstuffs, and manufactures.
