FICKLE WEATHER

DISAPPOINTING CYCLONE

The recent cyclone was very disappointing as regards its rain-producing capacities. Light to moderate falls occurred over almost the entire Dominion during Sunday night, but yesterday's rain was confined to a few scattered falls in the North Island. Falls were not prolonged or heavy enough to be really beneficial in those districts suffering from drought. From all appearances the centre of' the cyclone seemed to be heading for Cook Strait or thereabouts; but it suddenly sheered off for some reason and the centre passed away eastward yesterday afternoon to the north of Cape Maria Van Diemen, and the cyclone is now out of effective range. At the present time a slight westerly depression is approaching the South Island, while a weak anti-cyclone is located, over the northern part of the Tasman Sea. Southerly winds have consequently changed to_ westerlies or northerlies in and south of Cook Strait. There has to-day been a general improvement in the weather, coupled with warmer temperatures. Auckland had dull, misty, and showery weather yesterday. In Wellington it was cloudy most of the day, with a cool southerly.breeze. A dull morning in Christchurch was followed by a sunny afternoon when the wind changed from south-west to . north-east. ■ In Dunedin yesterday it was, fine and sunny all day. : ■ ' .■, '. • North of New Plymouth and Napier moderate south-westerly winds may be expected. Elsewhere winds will be northerlies or westerlies,, moderate to fresh generally, and strong at times about Cook and Foyeaux Straits. Panto cloudy weather is forecasted, but iv western 'districts from Taranald southward rather less settled conditions arc likely with scattered rain developing. Temperatures in eastern districts are likely to be very warm.
