RAILWAYS MANAGER
RETIRES NEXT WEEK
TO BE BOARD CHAIRMAN
The General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, Mr. H. 11. Sterling, will retire on superannuation on sth December, and ~will immediately be-come-Chairman of tho Government Railways Board. One of the first jobs of the new Cabinet will be to appoint a new General Manager, as this is the sole railway service appointment left in the hands of the Government. All other positions aro filled at the direction of the Railways Board. No indication of Mr. Sterling's successor has yet been given, though it is understood several of the higher officers of the Department are regarded as being likely finalists in the Government's choice. Some of those eligible for the position are close to the retiring stage, and in view of the policy of the Government to retire certain officers after long service, tho decision regarding the general managership is being awaited with some interest in the service and among the public. The appointment will probably be made before the end of the year.
