THIEF SNATCHES BAG
CHASE IN VICTORIA STREET
A leather brief bag containing about £74 was snatched from a woman cashier employed by M'Lean and Archibald as she was walking along Victoria street ot 11.23 a.m. to-day on her way from the firm's premises in Manners street to the bank. She was approaching the rear entrance to the Empire Hotel when.a man wearing a grey suit came up behind her, snatched the bag, and disappeared into the hotcl| There were several witnesses to the affair, and one of them chased the thief through tho building. He disappeared for a moment amongst tho crowd in Willis street, ai;d then doubled back to Victoria street through Chew's lane. Tho chase was then renewed, but the thief dashod up Mercer street and eluded his pursuers by boarding a moving tram. Several constables wore rushed to the scene in a police car, and, although efforts were made to trace the thief, they were without success.
