YOUNG ATHLETES

SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING

CREAM OF TALENT

An important part of the curriculum of tho secondary schools in New Zealand is the physical development of the boys. Every encouragement is given the young scholars to take part in sport. To-day, at Athletic Park, an opportunity was given the public to see the results of the coaching and the standard of athletic performance of the boys in the secondary schools of standing in the Wellington province. The occasion is the tenth annual championship meeting of the Wellington Secondary Schools' Athletic Association, and judging by this morning's events and the high standard established in past years, it promises again one of the finest sports attractions of the athletic season in Wellington.

NINE SCHOOLS REPRESENTED.

Tho representatives of nine colleges have been drawn together on a common field. Tho competing colleges, with the letters used in the results to indicate them in parentheses, are as follows: —Hutt Valley High School (H), Rongotai College (X), Scots College (S), St. Patrick's College (S.P.C.), Technical College (T), Wairarapii High School (WR), Wellesley Collego (\VY), Wellington College (WN), Silvcrslrcam College (SL).

Early this morning, with light, misty rnin lulling, the weather outlook for the bit; gathering looked none too promising, but the oflk-ials of the association, after having a word or two with the weather man, decided to carry on, and the change in conditions in the course of the morning confirmed their judgment. Clouds and rain gnve place to a blue sky and bright; sunshine. There was a stiff, gusty northerly wind, which, however, was not as strong as has been experienced in Wellington on other days this week. The rain overnight had not affected the track to any great extent, and the turf looked well. .

THREE GRADES.

Although mostly boys from the college:--, there was a good attendance at the Park this morning when tho sports started, and a large crowd was expected this afternoon. This morning was devoted mainly to miming oif heats, though there were also several straight-out contests. The competitors are divided into three grades —junior (under 15), intermediate (under 16%), and senior (under 20) on the Ist October.

The sprinters in the heats this morning were handicapped by the wind, but, nevertheless, there were some good times. In the first event—so yards junior—two boys, M. Watt (Wellington College) and B. K. MTherson (Wairarapa High School) eaeli returned 6 3-ssee in their respective heats. The time was only one-fifth of a second outside the record, and Watt looked capable of doing better in the final this afternoon. The half-mile senior championship was a fine race. It was won by T. B. Parsonage (St. Patrick's College), with L. Sceats (Technical College) second, and D. R. Porter (Wellington College) third. Ihe Wairarapa representatives, P. B, Barrer and W. E. Welch, were first to show out, but were soon displaced by Sceats. Before the end o£ the lap Parsonage had gone to the front. Along the back straight Sceats made an attempt to move ahead, but Parsonage was not to be overtaken, nnd iie went on to win by ten yards. Povtcr pot third place on the post, finishing about a yard behind Sceats. One competitor who had extremely bad hick was T. A. Watson (Wairarapa) in tlio first heat of the senior 120 yards hurdles. He had the race won but stopped at the: last hurdle, and failed to get a pi, -ure.

RF.CORD LONG JUMP.

A record went by the board in the intermediate long jump, the winning leap o£ 20£t Sin by S. G. Lamb (Wairarapa) being Bin better than tho previous best performance, standing to the credit of J. B. Stephenson (Wellington College), and established in 1927. The second boy, J. M. Hill (Wellington College), with a jump of 19ft Oin, equalled Stepheuson's performance. In the second heat of the 440 yards junior relay championship the Wellington College team, captained by M. Watt, equalled tho record of 51 4-ssec.

Prior to the resumption of competition this afternoon after the luncheon adjournment a parade of the competitors around tho jzroundHvas held, and in their trim costumes the young athletes, a picture of fitness, made an impressive showing. The results up to the time of going to press wore as follows: — JUNIOR. 50 YARDS, Hecord, G 2-ssec, V. Barber (S), 11129, and K. Henderson (T), 1930. First heat..—M. Watt (\VN), 1: L.
