LABOUR REPROACHED
ALLEGATION OF TIMIDITY
An offer to withdraw from the Wellington Central election contest was made by Mr. E. W. Nicolaus, Citizens' National Movement candidate, last night in the course of an address at Garrett street. He pointed out that the Labour Party's platform contained a plank"providing for. the collection of rent on unimproved low values, and he reproached Labour for its timidity in not putting this plank forward. He offered to withdraw from the fight if the Loader of the Labour Party gave a public assurance that the resumption of the rent of the land would be placed in the forefront of his policy.
This challenge to the Labour Party was not relished by a section of the crowd, one interjeetor repeatedly insisting that some remark or other was a lie. "All men are liars," remarked the candidate, "and I must content myself to bo one of them."
Another individual caused sonic amusement by asking the speaker for a definition of tho word property, going on to assert that the best brains in England could not give a satisfactory meaning to .tho term. "AVhy pick on mo then," retorted. Mr. Nkolaus, who went on to affirm that Labour gave I lie only, true title to property.
