THE COALITION
MR. FIELD'S VIEWS
Reference to the pact between the United and Reform Parties was made by Mr. W. H. Field, Coalition candidate for Otaki, when addressing the electors at Taita last evening. "The compact has not been faithfully observed," he remarked, ''and nobody regrets it more than I do." Mr. Field paid a tribute to the attitude of Mr. Sievwright,' the United candidate at the last election, and said that it must have bsen. a very great disappointment for him to have to retire.
"We hope," he said, "that the people of this country will follow the lead of the Old Country and return a. Government of tried and experienced men. The two leaders are recognised as strong and fairly popular men. Mr. I'orbes has strong common sense, fearless courage,' and if he feels that certain things have to be done, even if they are unpopular, he is prepared to do them. The same may be said of Mr. Coatos." Mr. Held also paid tributes to Mr. Ransom and Mr. Downie Stewart. The Government, he said, must havo a i'roo hand, because conditions were changing from day to day. •
