WOMAN'S STORY OF

ASSAULT

(By Telegraph.—Pvess Association.) CHRISTCHIJBCH, 20th Nov.

The assault story of Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Evans, aged 61; living alone in a small shop at Leit'hfield Beach, that two men broke into her home, threw ammonia into her eyes, seized her by the throat, bound her hand and foot to a bed, ransacked tho house, and took jewellery, and £5 in money, has been investigated by the: police, but no information from then is available.

It is now stated that a doctor's examination of the woman discovered no bruising or other hurts such as might have been expected she would have suffered in tho encounter she described. The Topes with which she alleged she had been tied were very unskilfully knotted, and the jewellery which she alleged had been taken was found in the house. No conclusive evidence has been discovered of any goods whatever having been taken. The two men whom the woman alleged she recognised as her assailants, swaggers who hare been camping in the vicinity, were able to establish that they were not in t!ho neighbourhood. It is understood that the police may discontinue the inquiry.
