WELLINGTON SOUTH

MR. M'KEEN AT GREEN

STREET

A large open-air meeting was addressed in Green street, Newtown, last evening by the Labour candidate for Wellington South, Mr. E. M'Keen. Mr. M'Keen said the greatest canker in the economic system was unemployment, but it could be solved if conimonsenso methods were applied to industry. There were numerous industries natural to tho country which could be encouraged. The Labour Party desired to create conditions that would give scope and opportunity to everyone by the encouragement of local secondary industries. New Zealand to-day was suffering because of the extravagance of past Governments. There were millions of pounds sunk in hydro-electric schemes and in railways which would never be completed. Opponents of the Labour Party stressed the need for business men, but business men had already been tried and found wanting. Mr. M'Keen declared that a reduction of 1 per cent, in interest rates would have saved the Dominion three and a quarter millions. The stupid policy of the past Government in reducing wages-and salaries and in carrying out wholesale dismissals had caused untold misery and insecurity.

Mr. M'Keen was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
