The famous racing; motorist, Sir Malcolm Campbell, in (company with four other well-known man, proposes to set off in January on an expedition to Cocos Island, in tho Pacific Ocean, south-west of Panama i, in search of the treasure reputed to Jhiavo beou hidden there by pirates move. than a century ago.
Two years ago Sib1 Malcolm Campbell spent almost a month on Cocos Island searching for tihe vast treasure which is said to bo ,'hddden there, the greatest pirate hoarvll in the world. Incurably romantic, ivHr Malcolm has stated that in any ottter age ho would rather have fancied being a pirate himself.. Before he set a new world's speed record on land early this year he stated that if he succeeded his next objective would be Co^ros Island again, and that he would st 4ly six months if necessary. The treasure on Cocos Island is estimated at £12,000,000,_ and it was the spot at vdiich the pirate Davis is said to have hidden the plunder he took from rich Spanish galleons two and a half centuries ago. Hero too, it is said, Benito Benito, another buccaneer, added to -i he hoard, while a century ago, when ike Spaniards of Peru were fleeing f roa a. the forces of Bolivar the Liberator, the Mary Dear set sail for Spain carrying 12,000,000 Spanish dollars in goficl. The lure of such riches was too much for the brig's commander, and!, he "disposed" of the passengers and ;Md the treasure on Cocos Island.
