A PLEASANT SURPRISE

(Original.)

"Oh, dear," sighed little Joan to her brother Billy.' "I 'do wish' we had enough money to buy some Guy fawkes' crackers with."

"Yes," agreed ■ Billy thoughtfully. "How about going for a walk, Joan? We may see Jean and little Tom." The children were walking slowly along when they saw an old lady carrying two milk cans to the village, half a mile off. "Come and help her to carry them," whispered Joan. "You know what, mutniny has told us.''

"All right," said Billy. Then they ran to catch up to the old lady. Mrs. Davis (the old lady) smiled at the children, as she gave them the cans to carry. "Thank you, dears," she said. And to their surprise she handed them three pennies each. "Oh, thank you!" cried the children happily. So Billy and Joan had their Guy Fawkes' crackers after all.

"PINKLE PUKE" (11).
