IMPROVED MEAT MARKET,
The Bank of New Zealand Produce Department has received the following advice from its London office as at close of business this week:—"The demand for wether mutton is improving, with better prospects ahead. The market for ewes is quiet and unchanged. The demand for lamb is good for the time of year. The demand for beef is steady. Trade generally is slow owing, to heavy supplies fresh meat. Wethers*, light 3%d to 4%d per lb, heavy 2%d to 3 5-Sd; ewes, 2%d to 3 l-8d; lambs, 2's 7d to 7Vu\. B's 6%d to o%d, 4's 5d to sYid, seconds 5d to 5V4d; ox hinds 3%d to 4d, fores 2%d to 2%d; cow hinds 3d to 3%d, fores l%d to 2d." Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd.. have received the following cablc&.am from their London agents, dated 20th November:— "Compared with last week's quotations, best North Island wethers under 561b 1-Stl per lb lower. New Zealand prime ox beet Ud per lb lower; other quotations unchanged. The market is quiet.
HIDES AND SKIN PRICES UP.
Wellington brokers offered on 20th November 10,500 sheepskins and WOO ox and calf hides, the usual buyers being in attendance. Competition was very brisk at about the level of last sale tor sheepskins, some sound pelted lots selling up to %d better. Hides were in very keen demand for all grades, light ox selling at par to %d advance. Medium weight ox were about l-8d higher, and heavies sold at par to %d better; lightweight cows advanced l-8d; medium sold _%d higher; heavy cows were about par. Yearlings, kip and calf were very firm at a slight advance. The range of prices was as follows: Dry sheepskins, halfbred, 3d to 4%d, fine crossbred 3%d to 4'/4d, medium crossbred 3d to 4%d, coarse crossbred 2%d to 3%d, half wools 2d to 3%d, quarter wools l%d to 3d, pelts %d to 2d; salted skins, pelts 5d to 6d, lambs, to 3d; hides, ox 331bs to 441bs 4d to 5%d, ox 451bs to £>21bs 4'/id to fid, ox 53lbs to oßlbs 4%d to 5V4d, ox tiOlbs to 691bs <l%d to 6 3-Bd, ox 71bs and over o',4d to 5%d, cow 33lbs to SOlbs 3'Ml to 5 3-Sd, cow 4.01bs to 481bs 3d to 5%d, cow 4fllbs and over 4d to 5 l-Bd, kip 231bs to 321bs 4cl to sd, kip 171bs to 241bs 4 3-8 dto 4 7-Bd, yearling lllbs to 161bs to 4 l-Bd, calf Olbs to lOlbs —, calf 61bs to Slbs 2d to 5%d, calf 31b to slbs H4d to 5 5-8 d; tallow, in casks 10s to 15s, in tins, etc., 119 to 12s; sundries, cow tails 7d.
