THE CANTERBURY CUP
The following 'letter, .signed Ru-wley, appeared" in "The Press" following the lecent New Zealand Cup Meeting: 'Theie were many'old hands present at, Riccaiton last week who lamented the passing of the'TJafctevbury 'Cup." While admitting that the Canterbury Jockey Club had no recourse but to abandon a tacc that for some' years must have entailed a serious loss"of revenue, they■ think that the name should have* been Telained even at the expense'l of Somd other race. The Stead Cup hasihada long1 innings, rather longer than any othex commemorative races in New Zealand 'and 'Australia. . The name conveys little'to the present generation, It nest year "the club finds itself in the pleasant position of being able to cany on a i ace that nowadays seqms to attiatt but"srhaU'fieiai—andT Sincerely hope" it Will—why should Jit not, while adhering to the'present-.conditions and distance, change the name to the Cautcibuiy Cup?"
