Mr. A. W. Wcllsted, railway commercial agent, "addressed a well attended meeting in the Town Hall last night ml connection with the Taneatua branch railway, which tho Bailways Board suggests may have to be closed uiile'ss. accorded better support. Various speakers stressed the importance of tho railway to the district) and at the conclusion of tho meeting the following resolutions were passed: "That a Railway Defence League "be formed to further the' commercial interests of the Taneatua branch railway, this league to co-operate with any other organisation formed for the same object." "That, tho Railways' Board bo urged to defer taking any steps to close the line. Tho railway would be an important factor in.-promoting the immediate closer settlement -of lands in the Bay of Plenty." '' That the- closing ■of the railway would be regarded as a'calamity, and the meeting recommends the Government'to give effect to^thc co-ordination of transport services."
